I’ve been using Serato Scratch Live for about 8 months now and am loving it. I really glad that http://www.scratchlive.net has updates on a regular basis, but I still am curious about Traktor Scratch. It would be nice to try Traktor out so that I can compare the two!

    Hello everybody,

I think this is not a good poll as the most stable system with by far the best controller is not on the list.

The best system when judged on stability and remote control unit (RCP-2001) is BPM Studio Pro by Alcatech.

Please put this on the list, you can check it out on http://www.bpmstudio.de.

Also by far the best scratch sofware which works with turntables and / or cd players is Digiscratch also by Alcatech.

    Go check it out!

    Greetings

I have been using virtual DJ for a while, I bought some time coded v’s to use on my Stanton tables. It had such bad latency problems. I was running top of the line cables, nice needles, duo core pc with 2G ram, and it was so bad i wanted to cry. After a scratch it took about a half second to catch up with the record… Horrible… don’t get virtual dj if you want time coded v

As a novice to DJ software I decided my review would help those who were interested in Virtual DJ 5. I have been playing with it for about a month and overall I feel it will definitely fall short for any DJ for these reasons I state below.

I had read reviews about Virtual DJ crashing and running unstable. Testing this on Vista only, I had no issues or crashing so those claims are invalid, the software works. Anyway, I start with something simple, a song with a nice straight tempo, so I choose Dazz Band Whip it as my beat, I then try to sync a different random vocal track with a similar tempo so I choose some 2Pac, remember were testing here, my choices are based to test functionality. Using the auto-sync feature I was able to easily get 2Pac to sych his flow with the beat.

The unfortunate part to this story is that this auto sync feature/Smart Looping will work, provided the beats are straight and simple. Replace that beat with say, AC-DC’s Back in Black and you’ll see the flaws in the software. Whether it be for loops or other, a beat like AC-DC’s trick this program into cutting the loop at the wrong point/vocal flow doesn’t match the beat. Without these bare essential features working for all different types of beats, this programs usefulness is wearing thin, most insulting is the $300 price tag!!!!

On the bright side the music/vocal remover and tempo adjustment tools are the strongest points, I have also read that the video sync tools are great but didn’t get that far as the loop issue irritated me to uninstall this program. All this software is in essence is AtomixMP3 reskinned with Video editing feature for $200 more. Not being able to create easy loops drops this score of this software into the trash in my opinion because this is a basic part of DJing, generateing loops to drop lyrics and sound effects on. I hope to try the other products and can see why you have this blog.

The vital thing to grasp here is that I have used a lot of different products along the years and this site has introduced me to some new ones I’ll try soon. I would say “buyer beware” in this particular market as it seems there’s a lot of junk at high pricetags that won’t deliver the basic elements of what this software supposed to bring, an easy intuitive method of making the DJ experience more user friendly. I wish Virtual DJ the best, but my score has to be a 2-3 of 10 until they can get back to the drawing board with a product ready for prime time.

The worst system has to be that BPM Studio Pro by Alcatech.
Its really very very crap !!
Also Digiscratch by Alcatech is even worse.

    The CAT:

You’ll quickly note if VDJ hasn’t recognize the beat in the song by trying a loop if not by hearing. In this case click the BPM button and either tap the bpm or the easy way: click begin and wait for say 8 beats, click end and if it doesn’t say 8 beats then change that. Now loops work.

  9. oldfart says:

… Of course if the song was recorded from a vinyl without a quartz lock enabled, then the speed could fluctuate and ruin things. VDJ used to have a feature to support “elastic beat match” but no more. You need to use Ableton or other soft to fix the song so it’s steady speed.

That’s most often problem with Disco and Rock mp3′s and playing them in VDJ relying on the beat match is painful.

  10. Dj Sweet C says:

Traktor is a serious software, Serato is the king but i went with Traktor to be different and not disappointed one bit, its interface is the best i seen hands down ans it sounds great and stable, i waited for Reflex and had to move on when it wasnt released, and glad i did Traktor or Serato, Basically BMW or Benz your taste both awesome.DJ Sweet C

hi i vote for final scratch because it s an excited soft

  13. NAp0 says:

I’ve worked with Vdj since 1.9 version, is the best software i’ve used but i never have mixed using cerato, people talks a lot about cerato, but Vdj is very cool if you got the perfect hardware, it works well with Hercules for example but not well with Bcd3000 that’s why Behringer mixer bcd3000 hs been designed for traktor, there’s a lot of digital mixers designed just for exclusively software and try to run over Vdj sometimes is not a good idea, anyways is the best choice, cool software!!!

  14. Dpac says:

    Hi’all wasup!!
hey guys i wanna learn how to use d dj mixer softwares….pls do help me

I have Virtual Vinyl and also have the Total Controller. The digital program is “ok” with the controller- but the vinyl interface box locked up 3 different computers on me and has glichy, buggy driver problems. I’ve been going back and forth with Numark support- who will just not simply do anything for me! I even bought a Cue LE disc that came with the “Controller” that was showing “corrupt installation files” and they said they’d replace it- but have not. I had the DJ IO interface which worked for 25 days and died- got it returned- and have been waiting weeks for THAT to be replaced. Their software and products other than turntables are not reliable and the program is SUB-par. I’m currently trying to get my bank to try and make them take it back- This program is a “Virtual” disaster- Save your money and get Serato! I sure wish I had- and plan to as well.

  16. Kevin Greene says:

Also as far as the beat sync auto mixing on Virtual Vinyl and DJ(I’ve used the other at a club I worked at) – One minute it will work beautifully the next mix it will just slam cut or completely miss sync and you have 13 seconds of noise that feels like 5 minutes! This product is not ready and should’ve been tested more- It’s hard enough to make a living as a DJ without having your time, reputation, and money wasted like this.

  17. Micky Blackmarket says:

    hiy guyz,

Used Mixvibes Dvs 2 with Timecode V’s,i had the worst time ever as the Original Mixvibes U4mk2 soundcard is the worst interface i have ever used as it keeps on crashing the whole software. Its a shame as the mixvibes software interface is brilliant,i would only reccomend mixvibes with a top end Firewire Sound card, now im Using Torq Which Is good but still feels abit unstable,i have also purchased a copy of Rane Serato Scratch which i will comment on when i recieve it :)

  18. LickShots says:

I personally loved PCDJ, even though one could say its fairly the simplest of the lot its fucking amazing…Serata and Virtual DJ are okay but it takes away from the point of DJ’n in the first place when ur too busy mixing and not hyping the crowd…u guys seem to have forgetten the fundamentals!!! :)

  19. [...] the best? …. the Original Mixvibes U4mk2 soundcard is the worst interface i have ever used …http://bestdjsoftware.com/wordpress/?p=37NU REVOLUTIONSNumark’s sound card is a no-nonsense, solid metal black box. It’s tough enough for … [...]

  20. jacob says:

Now that Serato is on version 1.8.1, it’s as solid as ever. That’s the beauty of Serato, it’s stable and simple. If you need effects and stuff, go with VDJ or Traktor, but if you just want a kick-ass DVS solution that never crashes, go with Serato.

  21. mtcinema says:

No offense to Anybody but I see a lot of discussion about auto beat match working or not working. As a professional DJ I would say work on your beatmatching skills by ear and leave the auto beat match mixing to the bedroom DJ’s who spin for their girlfriend on the weekend.

you whant the software mix .and you just aplause you stupid man

  25. Marius Calin says:

vote for traktor… love you anyway

  26. Marius Calin says:

With decks today its easy to sync without autosync button just like the software so dont play smart with me. So what if you do a mix with Traktor dj or do a mix with Denon player with electronik display aaaaaaaaaaa? If i buy a Denon or somthing else i kan be smart like you aaaaaaaaaa? A lot of people today know how to beat mach withowt autosynk buton important is that you have talent. So dont play smart if you have players at home. Maybe yow dont know nothing and you have money :) ))))))))))))) . Peace

  27. Niels says:

vdj is for nubs. I used to use it but recently switched to traktor. I’m sure there’s other software as good as traktor but seriously, I think vdj needs to stay in the beedroom, no more microwave djs please. oh and for the dude who can’t stumble his way over the new paradigm. stop trying to justify your shity dj “skills” by saying you can beatmatch. “sick man, I practiced for a few months and now I can beatmatch!”. have you ever played an instrument? practiced anything, really? Djing’s not about “skill” its about creativity, being technologically competent, having large amounts of music, and entertainment. I’m sorry if offended anyone else

  28. D-Jam says:

I think the best system is based on who is using it and how they’re using it.

I originally had Final Scratch, but after the Stanton/NI split I was thinking Serato. However, after weighing the pros and cons, I picked Torq simply because it was less expensive and gave me way more for my money. I had peers poke fun because I didn’t get the “industry standard” like some sheep, but I really am very happy with my decision.

“best” is only going to be seen by the user. I could say Torq is the best, someone else could say Serato, or Traktor Scratch, or even Virtual DJ. You can’t tell by the user, but more researching and deciding what will work best for YOU.

  29. Jan says:

Hey guys, you should check out the new software “djay” for Mac OS X: http://www.djay-software.com. Although it’s not for you time-coded vinyl users, for most everyone else it’s IMO the most stunning and intuitive software out there. Finally some fresh air in the DJ software league.

  30. dj black snypa says:

Virtual vinyl is the worst pro dj softwere ever I would not recomend anyone to wast there money I did and luckely I was able to get my money back and I am goin to use sarato

  31. dj black snypa says:

I am checking out serato and it seem to be the best with stablity , perfromance and quality

  32. FormulaJ says:

I have to agree with the dude who reviewed Virtual DJ. It does seem to freeze on me as well.

  33. dj black snypa says:

I now have serato its realy good its reliable quick profesional and fun love it highly recomended if u want to be a reel dj next to who still use vinyl get serato live

  34. Traktor DJ studio is the best one if you have time to learn it properly

  35. archetype says:

Serato scratch has always been my favorite- always new updates/new features being released. i also just got a pair of Pioneer CDJ 400′s , which scratch 1.8 officially supports direct link with the 400′s via usb – i.e. no time code disks needed and scratch is completely controlled from the cdj’s = never needing to touch the laptop during your set again! I’ve tried traktor which seems promising and stable though the waveform isn’t as good as serato- doesn’t have the colored waveform differentiating high’s, mid’s and low’s etc. also as far as i know, it doesnt support any direct connection with hardware such as with my cdj 400′s and serato. torq sucks, always glitchy. also, is final scratch still supported? pioneer dj’s is ok, nothing fancy, no where near as comfortable as serato.. virtual appears to be buggy though its cheaper than the “top” products so i guess you get what you pay for. effects and features are necessary, use a mixerfor effects and such. only thing that matters is ease of use and reliability.

Also – to the people posting regarding “auto beatmatching” -if you need to use an auto bpm matcher at any point, you obviously haven’t progressed enough as a dj- the 1st thing you should have learned was beat matching as its the core of mixing. keep practicing how to beat match w/ your ears and eventually it will “click” for you and you will wonder why an “auto bpm matcher” even exists. seriously, that’s like taking away 30-40% of what little skill is involved in mixing. its basically cheating..

  36. DJ Snug says:

Personally I’m an Ableton user and think it really advances my performance, live i use a Xone 3D mixer, CDJ1000′s and Ableton 7 Live. And it has totally revolutionised my sets. The amount of times I get asked ‘what remix was that?’. ‘Mine’. Ableton is incredibly stable I’ve had no problems with it since I started using it 2 years ago. I have experimented with other sorftware but for my style (progressive, tribal, deep, tech house) Ableton is the absolute king!!!

  37. DJ Snug says:

One other thing, totally agree with the guys about auto beatmatching. What is the point of that?? Mixing isn’t everything in DJing at all but it is definitely something that you should be able to do without thinking about, not by pressing a button though!!

  38. djcc says:

NUMARK CUE IS THE SAME AS VIRTUAL VINYL AND VIRTUAL VINYL IS THE SAME AS VIRTUALDJ!
    THE SAME PROGRAM DIFFERENT NAMES!

    VIRTUAL DJ IS THE BEST!

  39. Reggie says:

Im curious on what program to get to cancel music to get accapela, or in reverse.

  40. EEE says:

Listen so far from what I’ve seen is that Virtual Dj Pro is the best software. For you analog users who do it the old fashion way with the turntables Serato is the way to go, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to beat match or mix, this is the year 2009. If you still stuck on using turntables it’s cool, but you might as well be stuck on using VHS and cassette tapes rather then HD Tv, dvd players and bluray since you like it old school. I’ll stick to using my labtop and if I make enough money I’ll buy the turntables… Won’t use them that much though.

  41. DeepRED says:

M-Audio Torq is very good…I like it better than Serato…I have used a lot of them so take my word…

  42. mr next says:

i work with and know a lot of DJ’s so don’t take offense you guys, but any DJ who complains about someone cheating is a bit out of line. try actually learning an instrument for several years, and then you can maybe, possibly complain about how someone isn’t actually doing anything. if you’re a DJ, you’re guilty…stop hating on people for auto matching beats when you’re JUST a DJ!

  43. mutt says:

serato is for djs who dont know shit about computers and are scared to learn.

traktor is for tekkys who love to midi map and tweak the hell out of the program and songs,
hands down traktor does what serato does plus a 100
    all other is crap…………………
serato users are beatin on a dead horse.

  44. illuminati says:

    EEE,

No disrespect but the difference between us “old school” DJs and you microwave DJs is we’ll sound the same whether the technology is there or not. You guys use technology as a crutch while we use it as an enhancement to our already honed skills. Where I’m from in CA, the DJs actually perform LIVE and showcase their talent. They don’t let the computer mix for them or bring premade mixtapes to the venue to fake the funk. Let me ask you something, when you go to a concert to see your favorite artist… are you there to see him/her lip sync OR are you there to see them perform live to witness for yourself if he/she really has talent? One example would be comparing…. Ashlee Simpson (fabricated sounds) to Mary J. Blige (natural talent) lol.

Back to the topic at hand, like one person said earlier it’s ALL ABOUT the DJ behind all the equipment who makes the magic and not about the expensive equipment in front of the perpatrating DJ. The equipment does not make the DJ. For the record, I myself use Serato.

  45. chris says:

I still really think that the pcdj blue and Red were the simplest to use.. might not be the mext for mixing and scratching but for the mobile they were awsome now the are going to the dex or what ever i did not like it Simple sometimes is the best way to go…. Ps pcdj customer service could be a bit friendlier

  46. wazza says:

mixvibes for me…..I have been using it for about 4 years could not be happyer

  47. Bluestilo says:

I enjoy mixing it up, i am certainly no pro but i do a few functions for a little extra cash. i started on AtomixMp3, then moved to virtualdj. all this was mixed with a keyboard and mouse – i hated it (it looked really geeky)and limited. I decided to get my first console, a BCD2000 with B-DJ. I have one comment for it, “avoid it like the plague.” It kept crashing on me and would have to revert to ipod or my Stanton CD500 CD players as backup. I would love to play on vinyl as i believe it is the way of the DJ. But where i live, you lucky to find a shop that sells any decent music regardless of what media it comes in. I am now looking at getting a new consol. i have used VDJ and enjoy it but it has at times given me a headache. I see alot of consoles are being bundled with traktor le 3. What is worth my while, staying with VDJ and getting the hurcules or learning Traktor and get either a numark or reloop console. would love some help on this.
One more thing, i don’t care if i have to learn beat matching by ear or learn how to press a sync button, just as long as we all have a great party and the program is stable.

  48. DJ RuDeDoGG says:

Virtual DJ 6.0.1 is by far the best out there. I own Serato Scratch Live 1.9, Pioneer DJS, Traktor Scratch Pro, Ableton, PCDJ (all), MixVibes and other programs and all are pretty good and have their strong points but none have all the features and options that VDJ has. Don’t listen to these guys who say otherwise, they are probably having equipment issues or just don’t know what they are doing. I can’t tell you how many DJ’s I have encountered who badmouthed VDJ until I showed them that their equipment was malfunctioning or they didn’t have it set up properly. The other few people who have had problems I found were using a cracked copy of it which explains their dilemma. Good quality equipment and setting it up properly makes all the difference in the world. I have been a DJ for a long time and I know what works good. Serato is great and so is Traktor and MixVibes but they just don’t compare to VDJ. It isn’t a complicated program to install and dial in, but anything that’s as good as VDJ takes proper time to set up and configure. I’ll bet more than 75% of the people who talk trash about VDJ have inferior equipment and are using a cracked, stolen copy. Beware of all the marketing hype from the other companies. Too many people fall victim to commercialist hype, Serato this…Traktor that…all these people have fell victim to the marketing blitz and follow like a bunch of sheep of a cliff. Virtual DJ is the number 1 DJ software in the world and they don’t even really advertise like the other companies, they don’t have to, the software sells itself. If you have a legal copy and good hardware? You will find out what I mean.

  49. DJ RuDeDoGG says:

BTW, I use all Pioneer equipment with Virtual DJ, two CDJ-400 CD/USB and a DJM-800. Like the guy using Ableton (which is an awesome program too) I get people who come up to me and ask what remix that was too and I tell them it was mine and they can’t believe it. Virtual DJ has so many effects, sampling abilities, looping and countless other features, all the tools you need to create your own “remix” is there. You also get music video playback, scratching, transitions, effects and etc that come\ with the package at no extra charge. Most other programs such as Serato you have to pay extra to play music video and it doesn’t even come close in quality and effects. When I play music only I like the Sonique visualizations (similar to the screen graphics on windows media player), people love it when I do a show with my LCD screens playing and mixing music videos and visualizations while I mix it up the music. It really compliments my DJ laser light show and LED DJ lights. It’s simply an awesome all-in-one program that also offers free upgrades for life and a community/forum for help and tips/hints, a great bunch of professional DJ’s with years of experience and advice at your disposal, you can’t beat it.

  50. DJ RuDeDoGG says:

I am from L.A. Cali. I use Virtual DJ and play live shows too and I showcase my talent. I don’t need a DJ program to mix for me, that’s not why I use one. What it does is enhance my show. Don’t let these guys who call us “microwave DJs” while they do shows using Serato!? lol, they are using a program too!! Serato has its own sync functions as well. I never use a “pre-mixed set” or auto-mix feature. Hell no, that’s not what being a DJ is. In that case bring a jukebox. No way, I do a live show while VDJ enhances my set with loops, samples and video visualizations and other features where a computer is needed. In no way does it take away from my 25 years of experience where I started out with vinyl, that vinyl experience I have just make me that much better as a computer DJ. I still beat-match manually. VDJ doesn’t take that away from you, but like Serato you can sync on the fly if you choose to.
