Serato Scratch Live

In April 2004, Serato Audio Research, an audio software specialist out of New Zealand, teamed up with Rane to bring us DJ’s a revolutionary new product, Serato Scratch Live.  At the time, Stanton FinalScratch was the only other true competitor on the market, and had been on the market for some time before Scratch Live’s introduction.

As of this writing, Serato Scratch Live is almost ready to release it latest software version, v 1.7, and releases such updates on a fairly steady basis.  Serato also has a popular forum in place at www.scratchlive.net, to assist fellow DJ’s with the product.  Another Serato site, www.whitelabel.net, is currently in beta, and allows Serato DJ’s to download songs for free, with the high quality versions of the songs only able to play with the Scratch Live software.

Serato Contents

When you purchase Serato Scratch Live, you receive the software, 2 time coded vinyl records, two time coded CDs, the SL1 hardware, a USB cable, and all of the RCA cords that are needed to hook the product into your rig.  Another nice feature is that all of the software updates are available to download for free on www.scratchlive.net.  You can even download the software before purchasing the system to get a head start on organizing your music library.  However, you cannot play anything until you hook up the SL-1 to your computer.

The DJ software has all the bells and whistles that you would expect, cue points, looping, bpm tapper,  master tempo (ver 1.7), and the list goes on.  At the same time, Serato doesn’t go overboard with features.  They still leave it up to the DJ to perform well, no auto-beatmatching here.  Serato will not make a terrible DJ good, but it will make a great DJ even better.

Serato Scratch Live has long been acclaimed for it’s low latency and software stability.  Computer crashes are rare, especially with the latest software updates, and the computer requirements are fairly reasonable.  If you do own Serato Scratch Live, and your computer isn’t up to date, you can adjust the software’s setting to work well with your system.

Serato Scratch Live Setup

Now, in 2007, Serato Scratch Live has a large list of loyal members, and continues to update it’s software on a regular basis.  With all of the new DJ software being released on the market, it will be interesting to see how Serato will react.  In my opinion, the currently have the digital DJ throne, and it will take something extra special to throw them off.

What’s that?  Do I hear a Traktor coming!

I am a fairly new user of Serato Scratch Live and absolutely love it. I was so confident in this product, that the first time I opened the box was at a wedding reception dance that I was DJ’ing. I used it for the first time that night, and it did not let me down. In fact, it will change the way I DJ forever! I can’t wait to see what Serato will add in future updates.

The king of the hill, the top dog, the grand royal, numero uno of all the DVS stuff out there (at least in terms of usage and name recognition). It’s basic and damn near featureless but it’s sooo dependable (like grandpa’s pick up truck) you gotta love that. It don’t do alot but what it does it does WELL and I’m speaking from experience.

  3. DJ Mike says:

I got Serato and Virtual DJ and I can tell you that Virtual DJ is a lot user friendly than Serato. Serato doesn’t have the options that Virtual dj has. However I must admit that Serato interface is awesome but the software itself its hard to use and its way behind compare with virtual dj. Not to mention that every dj has its own experience. Also I must admit that all the RANE products especially mixers are the best, that’s no doubt about it.

Will, I’m almost positive that Serato works with Windows Vista. I run it on XP, but if you go to the Scratch Live forum at http://www.scratchlive.net, you will learn everything you need to know about running it with Vista.

  9. Dj Dope says:

can you do loops like you do on vdj on serato???

  10. music says:

    What do you mean ?

  11. okun says:

I use virtual dj with an external sound card and i dont even need turntables to mix flawlessly. and when i say flawlwssly i mean you can get it right wit virtual dj almost to the point where other djs hate on you and tell you that youre cheating.
i spin video and virtual dj has so many plugins and options for effects and transitions. i’ve configured almost every button on my keyboard and made macros so i can do multiple things with one button and that really gives me a huge advantage over using turntables.
the most important thing is the loops tho.
with virtual dj you have all the bpms for all your music so when you functions like loops and overloops or anything that requires an accurate bpm you’re ready to go and it gets things absolutely perfect.

  26. Teng says:

is Serato Live compatible with VirtualDJ software?

  27. dj xxx(nemesis) says:

in jamaica most professional djs use it. if u cant really mix tho dont use serato, its for real djs. most times i dont even look at the screen and if i do i dont need my headphones but u have to know your stuff. it basically enhances your skills no beatlocking crap. its heavens gift to djs

  28. dj frenchyz says:

    WAIT A MIN EVERY1 !!

virtual dj is good and not good to start off with.

your not a DJ if you auto sync your beats, virtual dj SYNC is like taking a short cut. Your taking the true word out of DJing.

the way u get respect is to beat match using ur own skills not autosync.

i mean this in a friendly way , im the best dj 2145 has , ive been everywere so yeh.
    all the best

  29. DJ Lawrence O says:

I recently traded in my SL1200 and pioneer DJM-1000 for a flightcase with a DJM-800 and a Denon HC4500 remote for virtual DJ and the CD player as backup. True, it took a lot to get convinced. After all, computers are for amateurs, right? Not! A friend of mine convinced me to play a set with his iMac running virtual DJ. I was reluctant cause I didn’t know his content. What songs did he have etc… But it was so easy. Just type in artist/songname and voila! double-click to assign it to a player and hit the play button! So easy!

No more CD cases, no more record boxes you need to cary along. One flight-case, that’s it. Super!

By the way, all that scratching may be nice to show off what you can do or to entertain the audience a little. My experience though is that the crowd prefer a DJ that plays the right stuff at the right time at the right speed mixed at the right time. I love computer DJing!

  30. DJ Lawrence O says:

@DJ Frenchyz: I get what you mean but let me tell you this: a good DJ is a DJ that entertains the people. The people don’t give a shit whether he uses autosync or does it himself. As long as he plays the good records. It helps if a DJ can do the mix himself of course but then again, it’s like arguing about using flying fader automation when mixing a song or flying the faders yourself while recording the mix. The latte will undoubtedly result in multiple attempts before getting it right.

I feel there’s nothing wrong with trying to make life easier. Take a DJ like Tiësto, the so called world best DJ. With all respect to him, I’ve heard many better DJs than him. I feel he lets his records play far too long. He misses the opportunity to mix in a new record once the climax of the playing record has passed etc but he can mix.

I’d rather prefer a guy who gets his mixpoints straight and gets me enlightened. I know it’s like kicking a holy house bashing a dude like TIësto, but sorry man, that’s how I see it.

Anyway, the software on the market today will result in newbies playing perfectly nice sets without the proper mixing skills of their own and there’s nothing you and I are gonna do about it.

    Kind regards
    DJ Lawrence

  31. dj frenchyz says:

2 DJ Lawrence thanks 4 the reply, i got heaps of respect 4 tiesto aswell but i see him as more of an artist/ producer, i got heaps of respect seeing as his #1 in the world but i bet you if i gave him house , trance, hip hop rnb etc records he wouldent be able to beatmatch in the space of 3 mins.
This is my point were a TRUE DJ has the talent + skills to beatmatch, where as AUTOSYNC DJ only has a 1234 talent to press play on let go of the vinyl, besides most dj’s in the clubs never use equipment which offers autosync b .

  32. DJ Syndicate says:

Yo Terrence, I found a skin on the VDJ website that is very, very similar to the Serato skin, and I run VDJ time-coded vinyl additionally. The particular skin I use reads musical keys as well, and I can organize my whole musical library by 1) musical key, and then 2) BPM, which makes constructing a mix about 1000 times easier.

i have virtual dj and Serato scratch live sl3….i like serato pretty good interface but i think virtual dj has more things to work with….the price is also a big factor….virtual dj is much cheaper…..

  36. DJ Insane Payne says:

I been DJing for nearly 20 years just bought a labtop I must mention vinyl is always my first choice for djing but I’m getting older and can’t carry all the wax. What dj software do anyone recommend for me? thanks for your advise anyone?

  37. Dj Neon says:

for my experience virtual dj has the upper hand over serato, when plugged into the cdj 400’s it is the best, transitions, effects and multi-samplers give you the upper hand. serato is good but virtual is going hard

  38. Fredy123 says:

The only thing that virtual dj has over serato is that it does video at an economical price. If you really want to speak about a fact, 95 % of djs only do audio, not video DJ ying. When it comes to reliablility, serato wins all the way. Most top djs use serato, Dj schools use serato, Serato is always appearing at the Nams (Not virtual dj) Serato is found in most of all the club, Many companies want to work with serato. Effects like auto beat match or auto beat grid or changing skins or auto scratch doesnt make you a better dj. Another thing is, you still have to buy a sound card. How can you call this working best. The best is something that it made for one another. Serato software plus the serato box is 1 to 1. There are many djs that cant mix so its easier for them to use virtual dj because of many auto features. The day that Virtual dj has the upper hand is the day that Numark will make a controller to work only with virtual dj. The truth is hard to hear…. I speak real. So back to wich software to get…. Oh yeah, get serato… It sworks perfect and you daont have to do aolt of configuration. If you choose virtual dj, make sure you buy some aspirin. You will get a migrain from learning how to get it to work properly. Too much configuration.

I’m a true Christian Dj and will be making the transition very soon. My question is; mac or pc what do the pros recomend. Thank you.

  40. Mix Man Mike says:

Virtual DJ is good, but not reliable when playing in a club or house party. It’ll put you on the spot when the program closes spontaneously. And plus Virtual Dj is for dj’s that don’t know how to beatmix. Dj’ing is a lot funner when doing everything on your own. As for me cd is the way to go. The hell with a computer.

  41. Depends what u do. I am a club dj for 11 yrs. If u want to scratch use serato put on a show..do work do work..but iam a working dj using many songs in short period of tine virtual dj works for what clubs and owners like vlean beat mixing that keeps dance floors busy. People listen to the songs u play and how u nix it. Very rare is it do a club dj scratch. Average bpm is 125 to 134 . No need for scratching. Virtual dj wins do to the clean no worry mix factor. In my experience

  42. DJ KRISHAN says:

I love Virtual DJ, I have been djing for 7+ years, and I used wax before, I love using cds, but Computer Djing is wonderful. But if something happens to your hard drive or your computer, prepare for backup with cds……because you never know. I don’t have serato, but I know alot of other Dj’s all have serato. I think virtual dj is wonderful for me, serato is expensive in my opinion. I wish they had a simple solution sound card that enables me to use my cd players with vdj. I want to be able to use cds whenever I want, and play music from the software. I am in search of a sound card for virtual dj, I use the Behringer uca202 (2) and mix perfectly. But the 2 behringer’s don’t let me use my 2 cd players with the software. So I need another sound card.

I believe it’s all preference. Get what works for you, not what other people have….because I hate it how alot of people say you need serato in order to be considered a good dj. It doesn’t matter what you use to play music, as long as the crowd loves it, and people enjoy and the sound is good. Because when people dance, they don’t care for the best sound quality, they want loud music, and good music.

hi every1 serato version 3 or intimidation touch version 2 what wud you recommend i now its the industry standard but has jack fx and i do like fx i can mix so why have all the auto features what would every1 recommend serato or intimidation cheers
    leeclio1@hotmail.com

  45. DCA-Mike says:

The reason why many preffer serato over virtual dj is because, Many Dj’s love using Turntables or CDJ’s. Serato is the best software for that purpose. Virtual dj can be used for timecodes but it has problems. The time codes drift, Back spins sound distorted, Scratching is off and the pitch jumps. Any Dj saying serato is expensive.. You are very cheap. You want to be a pro dj but you dont want to spend the money on something good. Virtual dj is 300 bucks and then you buy a very good soundcard that will cost around 200 bucks or more.. Thats 500 dollars. Who’s the idiot now.. Dont tell me that you can buy the Maya 44 usb for 99 dollars.. That card sucks.
